Sodium Benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid, widely used as a food preservative. It appears as white granules or crystalline powder, odorless or with a faint benzoic acid smell, and is freely soluble in water. Its preservative mechanism involves converting to benzoic acid in acidic media, which inhibits the respiratory enzyme activity of microbial cells.

Main Applications:

  1. Food & Beverages:Commonly used in carbonated drinks, jams, preserved fruits, soy sauce, vinegar, pickled products, and fruit juices to prevent spoilage caused by molds and yeasts.

  2. Personal Care Products:Added to shampoos, mouthwashes, and cosmetics to prevent microbial growth. In mouthwashes, the concentration can reach up to 1.7%.

  3. Pharmaceutical Preservative:Used in syrups, oral solutions, and ointments to extend shelf life.

  4. Industrial Applications:Used in cooling water systems, paints, latex, and adhesives as a short-term fungistatic agent.
