Calcium Formate  also known as Calcium diformate or Formic acid calcium salt, is the calcium salt of formic acid. It appears as a white or slightly yellow crystalline powder, is odorless or has a slight acetic acid-like odor, and is freely soluble in water . It contains approximately 30.8% calcium by weight and has a high thermal stability, decomposing at temperatures above 400°C . Due to its neutral pH (aqueous solution is nearly neutral, approx. pH 7), it does not degrade vitamins in feed premixes, making it a highly versatile additive .

Main Applications:

  1. Feed Additive: Its primary use. It serves as an easily digestible source of calcium (approx. 30.5%) and acts as an acidifier. In piglet feed, it lowers gastric pH, activates digestive enzymes, and inhibits pathogens like E. coli, significantly reducing diarrhea and improving growth performance . Studies show adding 1.0%-1.5% reduces diarrhea incidence by over 45% . It is also effective for poultry and aquaculture .

  2. Construction (Concrete Accelerator): As a chloride-free accelerator, it speeds up cement hydration, shortens setting time (especially in cold weather), and improves early strength without compromising final strength . It is widely used in dry-mix mortars and floor screeds.

  3. Silage & Food Preservation: Used as a preservative for silage and certain foods to inhibit mold and bacterial growth, extending shelf life .

  4. Industrial & Textile Applications: Acts as a masking agent in leather tanning to improve chromium penetration and as a catalyst or reducing agent in chemical synthesis .

  5. Agriculture (Water-soluble Fertilizer): Used as a high-efficiency calcium fertilizer, providing rapid calcium supplementation to crops to prevent deficiencies like blossom end rot, while its acidic nature helps condition the soil .
