Chlorogenic Acid (CGA) is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound belonging to the hydroxycinnamic acid family. Chemically, it is an ester formed from caffeic acid and (-)-quinic acid, most commonly referred to as 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA) . It appears as a white to yellowish powder, is highly soluble in water and polar organic solvents, and has a melting point of approximately 208–210°C . CGA is a major functional component found in many dietary sources, with green coffee beans, tea leaves, and honeysuckle being among the richest.

Main Applications:

  1. Natural Food Additive: Utilized as a natural preservative due to its broad-spectrum antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. It inhibits bacteria, molds, and yeasts, prevents lipid oxidation in fatty foods, and is used in functional products like coffee beverages and chewing gum .

  2. Pharmaceuticals & Nutraceuticals: Acts as a nutraceutical for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome. It exhibits significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antilipidemic, and antihypertensive effects, helping to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism . It is also the primary active antiviral/antibacterial component in honeysuckle .

  3. Animal Feed: Added to livestock feed (e.g., for pigs and chickens) as a plant-derived supplement. It leverages its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties to enhance immunity, reduce diarrhea, and serve as an alternative to certain antibiotics .

  4. Cosmetics: Used in skincare products for its superior free-radical scavenging ability (superior to tocopherol and ascorbic acid) and UV protection, contributing to anti-aging, whitening, and sun protection benefits .
