Methionine is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid. It cannot be synthesized by the body and must be obtained through diet (for humans and animals). It is one of the most critical amino acids in animal nutrition, especially for poultry.
Two Forms:
L-Methionine – The natural, biologically active form.
DL-Methionine – A synthetic mixture of D and L forms, commonly used in animal feed because animals can convert the D-form to the active L-form.
Applications:
Animal Feed (Primary)- Added to poultry, swine, ruminant, and aquaculture feeds to meet nutritional requirements.
Pharmaceuticals-Used in parenteral nutrition (IV feeding) for humans; liver protection supplement.
